About Dr Rob Collins
Dr Rob Collins qualified as a medical practitioner at the University of Witwatersrand in 1993 and after 10 years as a GP, he studied Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria. He completed his MSc(Sports Medicine) in 2006, receiving the prizes for the best student and best research student in his class. He has been a lecturer in Sports Medicine at Pretoria and Wits for some time, as well as an external examiner at Pretoria, Wits, Cape Town and Free State Universities.
Rob has been the Lions Super Rugby (now URC & EPCR) and Currie Cup senior team physician since 2010 and is currently Chief Medical Officer at the Lions Rugby Company. He has worked for SA Rugby as the team physician for the SA’A’ rugby team and is actively involved with SA Rugby medical. He was elected as an Exco member of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) from 2010 to 2014, and was a disciplinary tribunal member of the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS) from 2011 to 2018. Rob was appointed as part of the inaugural MMA SA medical committee in 2020, but has since resigned from this post.
Rob treats many professional and amateur athletes of all levels, participating in a large variety of sports – from MMA and martial arts to dancing and gymnastics. Rob has treated many Olympic athletes (gymnasts, artistic swimming, track), world cup winning rugby players, world champion tri-athletes, cyclists, boxers, Jiu Jitsu fighters to name but a few.
